A criminal arson investigation is actively underway this morning following a harrowing structure fire at 807 Gage Street that nearly cost a local first responder their life.
Emergency crews were dispatched just before 8:15 a.m. after receiving reports of heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the unoccupied building. What began as a standard structural response quickly escalated into a near-fatal trap. Upon entering through a rear entrance, an interior crew from the Bennington Fire Department encountered zero-visibility heavy smoke, intense heat, and rapidly compromising floors.
As the team lost its bearings, a desperate “mayday” signal was transmitted. One firefighter became entirely separated from his team as the fire aggressively burned through the floorboards, completely destroying the central stairwell and blocking his primary escape route. Trapped on an upper level, the firefighter managed to navigate the blinding black smoke, locate a window, and safely scramble out onto the front porch roof.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported among civilians or emergency crews. The extensive firefight required a coordinated regional effort, drawing in mutual aid from the Bennington Rural Fire Department and the Shaftsbury Fire Department. Fire officials have formally labeled the origin of the blaze as “suspicious,” and the Bennington Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding unusual activity around Gage Street over the weekend to contact authorities immediately.
