Travel and Commuting Impacts

Commuters and drivers across Bennington County should anticipate wet roadways and reduced visibility during periods of rain and drizzle over the next several days:

US-7 and VT-279: The main corridors through the Bennington bypass, North Bennington, and Shaftsbury will see damp pavement and spray from traffic, especially on August 23 with 0.316 inches of moderate rain expected.
VT-9 (Molly Stark Trail): As drivers climb east toward Woodford and higher elevations of the Green Mountains, moderate rain and drizzle coupled with overcast skies can lead to localized low clouds and slick turns. Allow extra following distance and reduce speeds on mountain grades.
Secondary and Rural Roads: Local connectors between Pownal, Arlington, and rural neighborhoods may see standing water in poorly drained dips during moderate rainfall on August 23.

Outdoor Recreation and Mountain Conditions

If your plans take you outdoors around Lake Paran, the trails of Mount Anthony, or the Green Mountain National Forest, expect wet ground and cool, damp air:

Trail Conditions: Hiking trails around Mount Anthony and the Green Mountain National Forest will become slick from the 0.316 inches of rain on August 23 and intermittent drizzle through August 25. Sturdy, water-resistant footwear is recommended to prevent slips on muddy paths and wet rock surfaces.
Lake Paran and Local Parks: With temperatures cooling from 76.3°F on August 23 down to 68.1°F on August 25, outdoor activities near the water will feel increasingly brisk under overcast and drizzly skies.
Elevation Awareness: Higher elevations near Woodford and the surrounding peaks will feel noticeably cooler than the valley high of 68.1°F on August 25 and nighttime lows dropping to 54.2°F. Packing a light rain jacket or extra layer is essential for mountain outings.

Late Summer Seasonal Considerations & Community Care

As August winds down, the drop in overnight lows from 63.0°F on August 23 down to 56.9°F on August 24 and 54.2°F on August 25 marks a pleasant, noticeable shift toward late-summer coolness. With no severe alerts or extreme heat in the forecast, conditions remain manageable, but keeping pets dry and comfortable after walks in the rain will help keep them happy. As always in our close-knit Vermont communities, it is a great habit to check in on elderly neighbors and community members during damp stretches.

The Bottom Line

Keep the umbrella and rain jacket close by. Expect moderate rain and a high of 76.3°F on August 23, followed by cooler, drizzly weather with highs of 72.6°F on August 24 and 68.1°F on August 25. Overnight lows will dip from 63.0°F into the mid-50s (56.9°F and 54.2°F), bringing a damp, refreshing late-August stretch across southwestern Vermont.
