Upon entering through a rear entrance, an interior crew from the Bennington Fire Department encountered zero-visibility heavy smoke, intense heat, and rapidly compromising floors.
As the team lost its bearings, a desperate “mayday” signal was transmitted. One firefighter became entirely separated from his team as the fire aggressively burned through the floorboards, completely destroying the central stairwell and blocking his primary escape route. Trapped on an upper level, the firefighter managed to navigate the blinding black smoke, locate a window, and safely scramble out onto the front porch roof.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported among civilians or emergency crews. The extensive firefight required a coordinated regional effort, drawing in mutual aid from the Bennington Rural Fire Department and the Shaftsbury Fire Department.
