Gage Street Fire Bennington: Firefighter Escapes Window After ‘Mayday’
A Bennington firefighter narrowly escaped through an upper-story window Saturday morning after a mayday was called during a structure fire at 807 Gage Street. No injuries were reported, and police have opened an active criminal arson investigation.

Emergency crews were dispatched just before 8:15 a.m. after receiving frantic reports of heavy smoke billowing from the rear of an unoccupied building located at 807 Gage Street. What began as a standard structural response quickly escalated into a life-or-death rescue operation for the first responders on the scene.
Bennington VT Structure Fire Leads to Interior Collapse
Upon arriving, members of the Bennington Fire Department made an aggressive interior push through a rear entrance to locate the seat of the blaze. Once inside, conditions deteriorated with terrifying speed. The interior crew was suddenly blindsided by zero-visibility smoke, extreme thermal conditions, and rapidly compromising floors beneath their feet.

Disoriented by the blinding smoke and intense heat, the team lost its bearings, forcing commanders to transmit an emergency “mayday” signal.
As an immediate order to evacuate the structure was issued to all personnel, one firefighter became entirely separated from his team. The fire aggressively burned through the floorboards, completely destroying the central stairwell and cutting off his primary escape route.
Trapped on an upper level with fire blocking his path backward, the firefighter managed to navigate through the black smoke, locate a window, and safely scramble out onto the building’s front porch roof to safety.

Miraculously, despite a partial floor collapse and the frantic mayday call, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among civilians or the emergency crews on the scene.
The extensive scale of the fire required a massive, coordinated regional effort. The Bennington Fire Department was heavily supported by mutual aid from the Bennington Rural Fire Department and the Shaftsbury Fire Department, while the Bennington Police Department assisted with scene security and traffic control. Crews battled the flames across the first and second floors for hours before successfully bringing the scene under control.

While the physical flames have been extinguished, the fallout from the incident is just beginning. Fire officials have formally labeled the origin of the blaze as “suspicious”.
The Bennington Police Department, alongside fire investigators, have officially opened an active criminal/arson investigation. Authorities are working to piece together exactly how and where the fire was ignited.
