Pownal Dedicates Youth Sports Field to Jim and Nell Winchester

BENNINGTON, Vt. NewsWK — The Pownal community gathered Wednesday evening to honor Jim and Nell Winchester by dedicating the youth sports field on Route 346 in North Pownal. This event celebrated the Winchesters, longtime supporters of local youth sports and beloved convenience store owners who retired earlier this year.

Community Support Recognized

During the dedication ceremony, Jennifer Boucher from the town Parks and Recreation Committee remarked, “Going forward, this field bears the name of two people who define what it means to serve your neighbors. This field will stand as a reminder of hard work, dedication, civic pride, and deep-rooted love for Pownal.” The Winchesters were recognized for their unwavering support of local initiatives over the years, particularly in youth athletics.

Reflections on the Winchesters’ Impact

Select Board Chair Mike Gardner shared personal reflections, noting that he played on the same field 50 years ago, stating, “And you know who was involved? Jim and Nell. Every year, when you needed a donation, whatever you needed, they stepped up to the plate.”

State Representative Jonathan Cooper echoed these sentiments, stating, “There is not a single town in America that wouldn’t be better for the Winchesters being part of it. We were lucky that this is the one they chose to call home.” He emphasized the special character that the Winchesters brought to Pownal through their hard work and generosity.

Commitment to Youth Sports

Jim Winchester expressed his motivation for supporting youth sports, recalling his own positive childhood experiences with local teams. He noted, “It was easy for me to support a team, and I wish more people would do it.”

New Sign and Community Celebration

Boucher thanked Stewart’s Shops for their generous grant that funded the new sign for the Winchester Field and for providing complimentary ice cream during the celebration. The sign was installed with assistance from town Road Foreman Joel Burrington and the town crew.

The Winchesters made a lasting impact in Pownal, having operated their store for 47 years, serving as a community hub before retiring in March. This dedication ceremony marks a fitting tribute to their contributions and legacy within the community.
