Local residents of Barre, Vermont, are mourning the loss of Cynthia Stimmel Ross, who passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on June 1, 2026. Her life was marked by dedicated service to both her country and the community through her compassionate healthcare career.
Born in Mount Jewett, Pennsylvania, on November 22, 1938, Cynthia graduated from Kane Area High School in 1956 before earning her nursing degree from St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in 1959. Over her 50-year nursing career, she held various roles, including positions in the operating room and general surgery, eventually managing a health maintenance center.
Cynthia Ross Vermont Army National Guard Career and Service
Cynthia also made significant contributions to the Vermont Army National Guard, serving as an Occupational Health Nurse from 1981 to 2001. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and participated in Operation Desert Storm at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where she earned an Army Achievement Medal in 1991. In 1997, she deployed to Macedonia, receiving a second Army Achievement Medal for her leadership in multinational medical training.
Family and Legacy
Cynthia is survived by her two sons, Patrick and Timothy, along with their families, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Jean, and her family. Cynthia was predeceased by her brother, John Stimmel, remembered fondly by his children.
Ceremony at Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery Randolph
For family, military friends, and close acquaintances, a ceremony and burial will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph on June 16 at 1 p.m.
Cynthia’s warmth and zest for life were reflected in her belief that laughter is the best medicine. Her legacy of service and joy will continue to inspire those she touched.
