The local emergency agency recently announced open enrollment for its paid apprenticeship program. Applications remain open through November 15, 2026. Therefore, local job seekers can train for a new career without taking on education debt.

Specifically, candidates take the FISDAP EMT Entrance Assessment. Applicants must score higher than 60 percent in at least three core subject areas. These subjects include basic math, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and general biology.

Leaders partnered with the Vermont Department of Labor to recruit new talent. Instead of asking students to self-fund expensive classes, the agency pays full hourly wages from day one.

At the time, Bennington Rescue Squad Executive Director Forest Weyen explained the strategy to VTDigger. He noted that the agency needed innovative solutions to recruit motivated workers.

“This will be a little hit on our salary line, but we are at the point we need people coming in the door,” Weyen told VTDigger in 2018.

Weyen emphasized that the squad wanted to offer people “a job with a future.” That forward-looking investment continues to support emergency staffing across Bennington County today.
