MONTPELIER, Vt. NewsWK — Bennington residents can take inspiration from the journey of Rose, a recent graduate from Vermont State University, who is gearing up for a promising career as an art gallery curator. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art now in hand, she is set to pursue her master’s degree this fall, fueled by her passion for art and a desire to inspire others.
Support from VSAC Makes a Difference
Rose credits much of her success to the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) and her outreach counselor, Michelle Legere, who guided her through the college application and financial aid process during her time at Richford Junior Senior High School. “Michelle believed in me. She saw what I was trying to do with my life and found a way for me to do it,” Rose expressed.
As an independent student, Rose faced challenges at home and was anxious about accruing debt for her education. With Michelle’s guidance, they explored various options, making it possible for Rose to focus on her artistic dreams without overwhelming financial burdens. “I don’t know if I would have been able to do it without Michelle’s help and without VSAC,” she said.
Artistic Growth and Community Involvement
During her time at Vermont State University, Rose not only honed her artistic skills but also contributed to campus life. She served as an intern at the Julian Scott Gallery, where she assisted in curating art exhibits. Additionally, Rose was involved in the gardening club, helping establish a community garden on campus.
Balancing her academic and athletic commitments, Rose was also an active member of the Johnson Badgers track and field team, competing in javelin and tennis. She reflected on her time as a student-athlete, stating, “Being a Johnson Badger taught me what it means to be a part of a team and to come together and experience getting to support and participate in something bigger than myself.”
Overcoming Challenges
Despite facing a medical challenge earlier this year with endometriosis surgery, Rose persevered and completed her degree on schedule, thanks to the support from her coaches and faculty members. “VSAC went above and beyond in supporting me,” she noted. Now, she aims to give back by serving on the Alumni Advisory Committee for GEAR UP, motivating other students to utilize available resources.
As she embarks on her next chapter in the master’s program, Rose is dedicated to inspiring future generations of artists. She encourages local students to take advantage of VSAC’s resources, emphasizing that it made a significant difference in her educational journey.
What’s Next?
Rose’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in achieving one’s dreams. As she continues her education and prepares for a career in the arts, local residents may find encouragement in her determination and the resources available to them.
