BENNINGTON, Vt. NewsWK — A new collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and several cornerstone organizations in Bennington County aims to bring national educational programs, public exhibits, and community resources directly to southwestern Vermont.

Local organizers and the Smithsonian Rural Initiative formally established the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding during a presentation at the Bennington Museum. Known as the Bennington Rural Renaissance Initiative, the effort connects local schools, libraries, and cultural non-profits with the nation’s premier museum and research complex.

Why it matters here

For families, students, and educators across Bennington, North Bennington, Shaftsbury, and neighboring towns, the agreement translates into direct access to Smithsonian-backed curriculum, teacher development, and public exhibits without having to travel to Washington, D.C.

Rather than providing direct monetary grants, the Smithsonian works as a capacity-building partner. This allows local institutions to share resources, design joint programming, and highlight the unique cultural heritage of southwestern Vermont on a broader stage.

What the initiative brings to local towns

The steering committee includes leadership from several local organizations that serve our area. Each partner has outlined specific projects that will roll out across the community:

Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (SVSU): Local students and educators will take part in the Democracy in Dialogue program, collaborating directly with classrooms in Talent, Oregon. SVSU teachers will also receive expanded professional development opportunities.
John G. McCullough Free Library: The North Bennington library has been selected as one of 16 institutions nationwide in the Smithsonian’s inaugural Rural Library Cohort. The library will host a year of Smithsonian Associates programming, beginning with a free public event titled “Apple of Uncommon Character” on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Bennington Museum: The museum plans to host the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street traveling exhibition, “Spark!: Places of Innovation,” in a downtown Bennington space in spring 2027.
Bennington County Multicultural Community Center: The center will collaborate with regional partners to introduce multilingual and multicultural programming alongside Smithsonian materials, while receiving support for the ongoing grounds transformation at Molly Stark Elementary School.

A new approach to rural engagement

The Smithsonian Institution operates 22 museums, the National Zoo, and 40 research facilities, supported through a mix of federal funding and private philanthropy. Its Rural Initiative was established to make those vast resources accessible to communities outside major metropolitan centers.

Andy Mink, director of the Smithsonian’s Rural Initiative, emphasized that the effort is designed around local strengths rather than top-down directives. “So our goal is to always be a partner, to show up hat in hand with humility, and to understand your priorities and how we can contribute,” Mink said during the presentation.

The collaboration builds on existing connections between the region and the national institution. Recently, the Bennington Museum loaned six works to the Smithsonian American Art Museum for an exhibition celebrating Grandma Moses.

Looking ahead

Local organizers spent roughly a year coordinating with Smithsonian officials to shape the local steering group. The initiative was convened by Mary Ellen Munley of MEM and Associates, working alongside Bennington Museum Executive Director Martin Mahoney, SVSU Director of Curriculum Melissa Senecal, Multicultural Community Center Director Jack Rossiter-Munley, and McCullough Free Library Director Jennie Rozycki.

Leaders noted that the programming agreements are designed for long-term engagement, allowing local schools and community groups to sustain projects across multiple academic terms.

Jack Rossiter-Munley highlighted the collective potential of bringing these civic anchors together. “What can that mean for a community like Bennington? And I invite all of you to bring your own answers to that question to our initial steering group, and we are looking for any and all opportunities to build something really beautiful together,” Rossiter-Munley said.

Residents interested in participating can look forward to upcoming public events at the McCullough Free Library this fall, as well as community-wide updates as exhibition plans develop for 2027.
