Remembering Vilma McGinty: A Lifelong Bennington Resident

Vilma “Phyllis” Filomena McGinty, a long-time resident of Corey Lane in Bennington, Vermont, passed away on July 23, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 98 years old.

Born on May 7, 1928, in Port Chester, New York, Phyllis was the daughter of Domenic and Jennie Lucente. After completing her education at Port Chester High School, she married Thomas William McGinty on October 22, 1948, and together they raised three children: Joanne, Tommy Jr., and Francis “Frank” McGinty.

A Legacy of Service and Community Involvement

Phyllis was known for her dedication to her work and her community. She held various positions, including working as a secretary for Port Chester High School and as a Teacher Aid in Rye Brook, New York. After relocating to Bennington in 1973, she worked at The Sewing Shop for 15 years until a fire claimed the business. Later, she joined the Southern Vermont Medical Center before retiring.

A strong member of the Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, Phyllis was active in the RCIA program and volunteered at the Parish Center. Her hobbies included bowling in the Women’s League at Bennington Lanes and enjoying time with her family.

Family and Services

Phyllis is survived by her children, Joanne LaBella (Pete), Thomas William McGinty Jr. (Michele), and Francis Xavier McGinty (Julie), along with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Delores Pirrotta.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM at Devlin Funeral Home in Bennington, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church. Phyllis will be laid to rest at Stump Church Cemetery in North Cambridge, New York.
