Frances “Fran” Bishop Hicks, a cherished member of the Bennington community, passed away peacefully at her home on November 3, 2023, at the age of 93. Surrounded by family photos, Fran’s legacy of love and humor will continue to resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born in Bennington on November 3, 1932, to Catherine Warner Bishop and George Bishop, Fran was proud of her Irish heritage and dedicated her life to her family. She graduated as a registered X-ray technician from Bishop DeGoesbriand Hospital in Burlington and began her career at the Albany Veterans Administration Hospital.

A Life Devoted to Family and Community

Fran married Donald Hicks on October 20, 1955, and together they raised three children: Martha, Charlie, and John. Her love for her children and grandchildren was evident, as she captured countless memories through her passion for photography.

After moving back to Bennington in 1977, Fran served as the Assistant Manager at the Bennington Job Service office. Her contributions to the community were significant, particularly in her roles with the State of Vermont as a Tax Examiner and Jobs Specialist.

Remembering Her Spirit

Fran was predeceased by her husband, Donald, and her sons, Charlie and John. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Hicks-Robinson; her granddaughters, Caitlin Cook and Bridget Obrynba; and her great-grandchildren, Isaac, Paige, and Lydia Obrynba. The family is also grateful for the extraordinary care provided by Erica Avalon and the kindness shown by Don’s grand-nephew, Nate White.

Fran’s joyful spirit will be remembered each year on her favorite holidays—St. Patrick’s Day and Independence Day—through the stories and traditions she passed down. A true matriarch, she will continue to live on as “GiGi” in the hearts of her family and friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral services for Frances Hicks will take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, at E.P. Mahar & Son Funeral Home, located at 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT. Calling hours are set for 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Catholic prayer service at noon. Burial will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery immediately afterward.

In honor of her love for flowers, Fran’s friends at Gift Garden will be providing floral arrangements for the services, ensuring her memory is celebrated with care and affection.
